Zach Wilson, a draft bust for the Jets, will get an extended tryout on Sunday against the Broncos.
With rookie Bo Nix already named the Week 1 starter, head coach Sean Payton announced a plan for Jarrett Stidham to start and play 8-12 snaps in the preseason finale against the Cardinals, with Wilson taking over for the remainder of the game.
This indicates that Stidham will likely be the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, despite the three quarterbacks initially appearing to be on equal footing when training camp began.
Could the Broncos keep all three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster after Tuesday’s cutdown?
Even with the recent rule change that allows teams to promote a third quarterback from the practice squad an unlimited number of times and keep him inactive unless needed in an emergency?
"Certainly, that's possible," Payton said to reporters this week. "I know the rule recently changed so that if you do, that third quarterback can be activated on game day without affecting the roster count. But ultimately, the most important consideration is evaluating your assets when making that decision."
Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft, was a disappointment during his time with the Jets, posting a 12-21 record with 23 touchdown passes and 25 interceptions over three seasons.
In April, the Broncos acquired Wilson along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
The Broncos and Jets are sharing Wilson's $5.5 million guaranteed salary for 2024.
"We have a pretty good idea of the direction we're going," Payton said regarding the quarterback roster decisions. "I think we have a solid understanding of that room specifically. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I like that room."
Just last week, Payton praised Wilson's improvements during training camp.
It didn't sound like he was referring to a third-string quarterback on the verge of being cut—unless it was a strategic move to generate trade interest in Wilson.
